The period thing makes a lot of sense to me, because I grew up with the idea that there were rational reasons for women being kept out of the kitchen when they menstruated etc. And plus, I think taking three days off to just sit and deal with BLEEDING FROM A HOLE ZOMG is a great cultural tradition.
