I had the same issue with it several years ago, when Earth Logic came out and people were talking about it. The first few chapters go pretty slowly; Marks avoids prologue-syndrome, but does so only by not getting to the main plot until quite a few pages in. I think it gets much faster the second time Karis and Zanja meet, though it could just be that the book doesn't work too?
