Italian Job

Wow it's cold now. And by cold, I mean highs of 60 ;). Yes, I was quite obviously not made to live in cold climates like New Jersey (heh), and really, I have no idea how I managed to survive four winters there!

So I'm sad that I'm probably going to have to stop eating outside now... no more sun because the wind is just too overwhelming. The good thing is that now I'm completely in the mood for things like pumpkin pie, hot cider, and various chowders and soups. I love soup.

Watched The Italian Job yesterday with the boy, who's been pushing me to see it ever since it came out. And I was quite pleasantly surprised that it's not a stupid car chase movie, although technically I shouldn't have been because reviews were pretty good. I guess what struck me the most was that in the end, there was such a deep underlying feel of affection between everyone in the heist gang, including the Charlize Theron character, that it really got me. Plus, Oz/Seth Green.

And there were three minis! I was immensely amused by that and yelled "Mini!" everytime they showed up on screen. Also, the plot was intelligent and had an unexpected turn (not so unexpected if you've seen the trailer, like I did, but I forgot, so was still surprised) and some pretty nifty heist stuff. I'm a sucker for the heist movies, as well as for the entire spy genre. It's all about the disguises and the nifty electronic gadgets for me.

I also really like how they very subtly showed Charlize Theron's character becoming part of the gang without making it some big sappy point and how they didn't just make her the sexy distant girl. I liked how the guys got mad when the skeevy villain hit on her and overall just seemed fond of her. Plus, I liked her last bit with the villain.

Another buying day today -- spotted OSC's Crystal City being sold and immediately put my name on it. I had no idea it was even out! I didn't even realize he had been in the process of writing it! Why was I not told! ;) So the Alvin saga continues, and from the flap, it sounds like the plot isn't advancing anymore than it did. I feel like the series kind of stopped dead after Prentice Alvin (my favorite so far), but I'll keep reading because I like Card, I like Peggy, and I really like his alternate America.
