Fullmetal Alchemist, ep. 11-14

I spam LJ because I need a break.

At least having bright red toenails makes things somewhat easier to bear. And must remember, am watching Batman tonight. Batman pretty. Fire bad.

Note: I watch episodes in chunks, so I am not too good at differentiating between episodes.

These single-shot episodes in which Ed and Al go off to do their thing and get yelled at because Ed is a State Alchemist generally do not catch my interest.

On the other hand, I like doubles. On the other other hand, the characters are still in the anime trope stage (I cannot define it, but they feel trope-ish to me), and the return to saving lives and the like is not as interesting as bad bad human resurrection or dog-girl mutations or people blowing up from the inside out. Er. Yes. We will not comment on how my tastes in fiction reflect upon my psyche.

But I do like how even these supposedly throw-away episodes feel like they're contributing to the overall arc -- the many fake Philosopher's Stones, the dangers that each of them have been causing. Anyhow, it doesn't really inspire much confidence in the likelihood that Ed and Al will find it without being terribly scarred along the way.

I keep thinking that they will end up finding it, as it is one of the big quests in the series so far, especially since Al's voiceovers in the beginning indicate that the rule of equivalent exchange doesn't always hold true. But given what the tone of the show has been like, I am guessing no good will come of violating the rule of equivalent exchange. I fear what the future holds for Ed and Al. Well, especially for Al, because I am incredibly fond of him and his seven-foot-suit-of-armor cuteness.

I love the fact that he hid a cat inside himself!

I got much, much happier once the story returned to East City and the military. I tend to think I'm not inherently interested in military stories, but I've glomped on to this one rather hard. Well, Roy Mustang and his little gang at least. I can't tell who I like the most, but I love the sheer manipulativeness and opaque motives of Roy, I love Hawkeye and her straight-laced-ness (actually, Hawkeye and Roy remind me of Zechs and Noin from GWing, which is probably why I've glomped on them so hard), and I am extremely fond of Havoc as well.

Maybe I have imprinted on the elite group within the military trying to overtake the military storyline because of Gundam Wing.

I also nearly fell off the chair at Ed's Roy Mustang impersonation. Want more Roy-Hawkeye-Havoc-other-people-in-that-group backstory! Why in the world are they following Roy anyway? And what does that sneaky bastard have up his sleeve?

And the return of the Scar guy! People exploding from inside out! Dark, sleazy military guerilla tactics and the bad bad use of alchemy! Have I mentioned I love how dark this show is?

I am still waiting for a non-good mother/sexy bad girl/innocent girl female character. I guess Hawkeye counts, but she doesn't get much screentime. And I want to see more of Lust and Gluttony (the eating of people is really creepy) and the other sin whose name I never picked up. And I'm so glad they're following up on the first two episodes, even though that means the return of the annoying pink-haired girl! Continuity!
