Fullmetal Alchemist speculation (spoilers to ep. 42)

Why yes, I am obsessed!

Again, spoil me and die painfully.

Spoilers up to ep. 42

Well, a lot of my speculation was totally wiped out by the happenings in episode 42. On the other hand, I continue to think that Ed and Al will not get their bodies back, or that if they do, it will be at a cost so high that it will be horrifying and not triumphant. Actually, considering how the making of the Philosopher's Stone went, I can see this happening as well.

I still have no idea who "that person" is. Obviously he's controlling most of the homunculi; Sloth and Pride seem to be the most fervent followers, while Lust may have been. She seems to be branching out on her own now, and I suspect Gluttony may follow out of habit. I'm really interested to see what will happen with Lust, now that Scar is (presumably) dead. I wonder if her past as an Ishbalite will somehow lead to her helping them in some odd and unethical way.

I'm hoping that Laila will end up being "that person" or knowing him.

I worry so much about Al. They haven't brought up the memory bit again, but I'm just so worried. He's so cute and sweet, and now he has all this power! I am really, really, really scared that one of the brothers will try to sacrifice himself for the other; I know both are capable of it. I just don't know if they'll have an opportunity to. I can see Al attempting to do something with the Philsopher's Stone to get Ed's limbs back and having it massively backfire.

My current crackpot theory is that somehow, people will find a way of doing alchemy that doesn't involve Gates and nasty little black things, possibly related to Izumi's slightly divergent theory of the circle of life. Dante also seemed to buy into that as well, even though she and Izumi are at odds with each other. We've seen Izumi caution against relying too much on alchemy; she may be biased, given her history, but I think the show also portrays her as being right. She's yelled at Ed and Al for continuing their quest, as has Dante, and I think that as long as Ed and Al are trying to erase the outward marks of their own sins, nothing good can come out of it.

Eep. I keep worrying that there will be massive carnage by the end. I do think that Mustang will end up making it to the top; he's so determined and slippery that I can't see how he wouldn't, eventually. Unless, of course, he dies. But I don't think he will. He's too manipulative to die ;).

So: speculation involves the complete rethinking of alchemy and what it means. Possibly outlawing alchemy ala Ishbal? And an eventual change in government; the Fuhrer/Pride will eventually be found out and brought down, despite great difficulty. I really hope that Winry and Sheska's information will be crucial to this. See, I can see the ending as being fairly happy for the world overall, despite the carnage at Liore and the past massacre at Ishbal. But I still can't figure out how things will end up well for Ed and Al, given that they continue to look for the stone (and their bodies), and that nothing that has to do with the stone or the results of human transmutation has ended well.

You may all mock me later ;).
