It's tough for me to digest what you've written all at once. But I just wanted to say that I've had very similar experiences to you in college. I never joined the Asian Students group in college precisely because I didn't want to be seen as self-segregating. I didn't want to be seen as one of those people who cry "racism" at the drop of the hat. But like you, as I've seen how cultural stereotypes and perceptions affect every day life in the real world, I've thought more and more about race.
Excellent post. We need more people provoking thoughtful intelligent discussion about race among those who might not talk about it otherwise.
