It is useful! Which is not to say that not knowing it disqualifies people. But I can't believe this is one of the first times in my life I have thought about race like this, seeing the consistent co-opting of a discussion of race going back to whiteness (not just on LJ, through college and high school as well) as a problem.
I can't believe it took me so long, and I am extremely ashamed of the fact that it did.
But a large part in getting here was feminist theory and substituting "minority" and "majority" in place of "female" and "male" and seeing that the patterns of discourse were alarmingly familiar.
