My mom and I had a conversation about "it tastes like wine" recently too. She likes wine and goes to tasting classes and such, but doesn't get all the things it's supposed to taste like. (I pointed out that she does like wine, and she gets to find out whether she likes several wines in each class, so it's probably worth it. I just don't care about any wine.)
"Wafer thin" in horrible French accent appears in Monty Python, so I bet that's where Alton Brown got it.
